The Word-Accent
An
accent or stress is an important feature of English language. Stress is
generally defined according to the degree of prominence in a syllable. If a
word has more than one syllable one of them stands out form the rests. Thus the
syllable that is pronounced more prominently than the others in the same word
is said to be accented or to receive the accent. e.g.
Table-/`tei-bl/,
The first syllable /tei/ is more prominent than the second syllable and so it
is said to be accented or to receive the accent.
Politician-/po-li-`ti-gn/.
The third syllable is more prominent than the rest and so it is said to be
accented or to receive the accent.
